The National Practitioners Data Bank (NPDB) is a government database of negative information on healthcare practitioners, including malpractice awards, loss of license or exclusion from participation in Medicare or Medicaid. The collection and disclosure of this information helps to ensure that high-quality care standards are upheld nationwide.

Through four major agencies—the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Health Resources and Services Administration, Bureau of Health Professions and the Division of Practitioner Data Banks—this database allows the federal government to take measures to minimize medical malpractice, unprofessional behavior and patient abuse.
